All breeds of dogs are welcome for pet training at Dugan's Dog House
in Aurora, Colorado
. Owners and trainers alike derive a great deal of satisfaction through working to understand the pet together and making any necessary adjustments.
Dogs are social animals that learn from watching and
interacting with those in their social group. As a trainer I want my dogs to be
able to build confidence by allowing them to think through situations and
choose the most appropriate response. Everything that we do should increase the
well-being of our dogs, while enhancing the bond between dog and owner. We here
at Dugans do not believe in using harsh or unnecessary force in our dog
training, instead we use positive encouragement to reinforce behaviors and
actions that we find desirable. That being said, we understand that dogs can
and will make mistakes, lose their focus, or can even be downright defiant. It
is in those moments that we use negative reinforcement or a correction to
discourage, stop, or modify any undesirable behavior, like jumping on friends
and family or the furniture, soiling the house, pulling on the leash, barking,
digging, etc. We understand that not all dogs are the same and our classes will
be modified to fit you and your dog.
Whether you just bought a new puppy, rescued a shelter dog,
or decided your family dog could benefit from some more training, we would love
to help. We offer both group and private classes. Classes are offered either as
an individual class or a package where we will work with you and your dog for
as many sessions as it takes.
6 week course for ages 2
months – 5 months
It is never too soon to start training with your puppy! Our
puppy classes focus on socialization and will help you to teach your puppy
basic commands such as:
We will also cover problem-solving ideas for potty training,
chewing, teething, digging and more. We will work with you to help you create
behaviors that you want from your puppy and discuss how to prevent problem
behaviors from ever developing. During class, we will also cover proper health
care and stress-free grooming techniques and we will make it fun!
6 week course for ages 6 months and older
Our classes start in a controlled environment where we can
help you build in your training and relationship with your dog. Once you and
your dog have a solid foundation, we will start applying “real-world”
scenarios; increasing our distance, duration, and distraction. In these classes
we take the time to help you overcome any behavioral problems you may be
experiencing; whether it is pulling, counter-surfing, running away, or any
other unwanted behaviors. Our ambition is to make your dog a loyal and obedient
part of your family.
The American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen (AKC CGC)
certification is recognized as a high standard of dog behavior and is an
excellent way to prepare for therapy dog training. Even if it isn’t your goal
to train your dog to be a therapy dog the CGC is a great goal to strive for. It
includes goals such as sitting politely for petting, walking through a crowd,
and other similar manners that you would expect from your dog.
Group classes are not for everyone or every dog. A private in-home
training session is a great way to receive one-on-one training that you and
your dog desire. There are some behaviors that would be easier to address in
your home; for an example; fence aggression, counter-surfing, charging the
door, and neighborhood distractions while walking.
While your dog is staying at Dugan’s they will receive the
benefits of socializing with other dogs and private one-on-one training
sessions. Your dog will not be left in a kennel. The dog training sessions will
be customized to your needs. Even while in the playgroup our staff will
reinforce the behaviors taught in class.
Once you pick up your dog you will have the opportunity to meet with the
dog trainer and work with your dog on the new commands and behaviors
learned. We offer ongoing support via
phone or email.
